  Dummy Types

I have come across one main dummy type, by this I mean the dummy remains much the same throughout history, most of the dummies I have seen are have upper arms offset but there are some where the upper arms are level, what tends to differ is there way the dummy is mounted, the traditional dummies were planted into the ground and are called dead dummies and when struck with some force whether blocking or punching do not move due to the solid base, with the development of the Yip Man dummy things changed, this dummy introduced an element of bounce/reaction to force, the idea is that the wooden man fights back, as a result various methods of mounting dummies have been devised since then below you will find pictures of the most common your will encounter these are called live dummies

Offset arms vs. Level

There are two types of upper arm for the dummy, and this is where it gets confusing, The DUMMY has holes for the arms, these holes are always offset so if you inserted standard arms then one arm would be a little higher then the other this is an offset with standard arms. If i wanted my dummy to have arms that are level i need to special arms called offset arms, take a look at these picture to see the difference.

An arm with the special offset

What you do with these offset arms is put them in opposite directions i.e. standing in front of the dummy the left arms circle faces down and the right arms circle faces up thus levelling the arms out

Q. Why would you want to do that?

A.
The answer is simple, to train both side of your body at equal height.

And a selection of dummy types...

This is a suspension dummy, note the black square brackets that are used to mount on the wall, the dummy then springs backwards and forwards. This dummy while has a neck is basically the same as the other dummies however this dummy and many similar framed can be mounted in the corner of the room. This dummy it demountable, its saleable feature is that it stand anywhere and be dismantled quite quickly maybe for demonstration purposes.
This dummy from immortal is free standing and made of plastic and can be kicked to the ground. This dummy is planted into the
ground using concrete.
Bolted to the ground this dummy swivels on its base/
