Training the Wooden Dummy (Muk Yan Chong)

The one thing that Wing Chun is well known for is the Dummy, but it still remains mystery to many, as a new student to Wing Chun you will want to delve right in, but you are new to the art what  are you going to use it for.

Before you can demonstrate the dummy form you need to know the movements that you will enact on the dummy, yes you can watch videos and study what other people are doing on the dummy and then repeat it back parrot fashion, but you must remember the dummy is a tool to assist you in feedback. posture and knowing how to hit it with out hurting your self and many other factors.

The dummy form has movements from 2 of the forms, Chum-Kiu and Biu-Tze, so if you have not trained either of these forms yet then the dummy form will make no sense and you power will be weak.

In the early stages of training if you do not have a training partner to train with then the you can practice. your hand movements such as Tan-sau, Fook-sau, Pak-Sau, Gaun-Sau and combine them with Dar to make Fak-dar and so on. you can also practice Ching-Sun-Gerk. you can also practice combination drills, other then that. at this stage of you training that's all you should be attempting on the dummy
.

Some lineages the teach the form in this sequence

  • Siu-Nim-Tau > Chum-Kiu > Muk-yan-Jong > Biu-Tze
Others will teach it in this sequence
  • Siu-Nim-Tau > Chum-Kiu > Biu-Tze > Muk-yan-Jong
Examining both schools of thought, the first would force you to learn Biu-tze before you can apply the movements to the dummy so you are learning both at the same time and i guess the idea is that you will be stronger and conditioned for using Biu-Tze and the second teaches you Biu-Tze then you can walk up to the dummy and be equipped with the required movements and techniques on contact although you may need to spend a great deal of time with posture and footwork.

I am sure there are many opinions on the subject, personally thinks that you should seek advice from your Sifu before doing any kind of dummy training.

After saying all of that you should also know that there are some great instructional DVD's and Books even posters that you can pick things up from but I would advise only using them in conjunction with you Sifu' training.
